As we say farewell to the Class of 2023 residents, we wish them the best as they move on to advanced training through fellowships in adult reconstruction, spine, sports, and trauma orthopedics.

Residents recently completed a hands-on "sawbones" lab for tools used in orthopedic surgeries. Trainings are a key way for residents to build skills and gain confidence in preparation for performing surgeries.

Jenna Scheeland, AT with the UArizona Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, was on the sidelines when high schooler Ryan Ruskay was injured. Her careful response paired with non-operative treatment by Dr. DeSilva quickly set Ryan on the road to healing.

Zong-Ming Li, PhD, vice chair for research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to carpal tunnel biomechanics and neuromuscular hand motor control. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

The Hand Research Laboratory under the direction of Zong-Ming Li, PhD, has been awarded $140,425 for machine learning research to advance the use of ultrasound imaging in evaluating the carpal arch. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common condition of nerve entrapment.
