Overview of Expectations

Responsibilities of Fellows

Fellows are both learners and physicians. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing safe, effective, and compassionate patient care under faculty supervision.  
  • Active participation in didactics, research, and teaching of residents and students.  
  • Meeting program milestones and maintaining accurate case/procedure logs.  
  • Upholding institutional policies, professionalism, and patient safety.  

Appointment & Continuation

Fellows are appointed for one year with continuation contingent upon satisfactory performance, adherence to policies, and professional conduct.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Fellows receive a competitive salary, health insurance, professional liability coverage, and vacation time (20 days annually).  
  • Leave of absence, parental leave, and disability accommodations are available in line with institutional policy.  

Duty Hours & Fatigue Management

  • Duty hours comply with ACGME requirements (no more than 80 hours/week, averaged over four weeks).  
  • Fellows must receive adequate rest and are supported by institutional fatigue mitigation systems.  

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is not permitted in the Orthopaedic Hand Fellowship at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Fellows are expected to devote their full professional effort to the educational program, patient care, research, and teaching responsibilities within the fellowship.

Support Services

Fellows have access to confidential counseling, wellness resources, and academic support services.

Evaluation & Certification

  • Fellows are formally evaluated at least semi-annually and at program completion.  
  • Upon successful completion, fellows receive an official certificate from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.
