Dr. Michael Miller received a College of Medicine - Tucson Faculty Award for Clinical Excellence in recognition of his work on complex joint replacement surgery.  The awards ceremony was held on March 10, 2026, at the University’s Health Sciences Innovation Building.

Over the last twenty years, Dr. Miller has been the key referral target for complex total joint replacement in Southern Arizona.  Many of his cases are too difficult or complex for other orthopaedic surgeons to handle. Many involve limb preservation procedures. Many of his patients, who were told nothing else could be done, can walk again without pain.  Complex total joint replacements involve custom implants for large bone defects, replacing large segments of bone related to fractures, infections, and failed prior hip or knee arthroplasty. Total joint replacement surgery, and complex total joint replacement surgery are the largest growth areas in surgical medicine. The revisions of failed joints often pile up in a queue in cities our size. Dr. Miller receives referrals from larger cities like Phoenix with patients willing to travel for his expertise.  Dr. Miller’s service also includes an element of charity. He performs these procedures during his vacation time in Mexico for those in need. It is rare to see a senior surgeon like Dr. Miller dedicated enough to donate his own free time to those who can’t make it to the medical center.
