What is a fellowship and why does it matter?

In today's U.S. medical education system, fellowships are specialized training programs that physicians complete after their residency. They're designed to provide additional experience and expertise in a specific area of medicine, such as sports medicine or joint reconstruction. They're typically a one- to three-year program and involve both clinical and research components.

Fellowships are important for several reasons:

  • First, they give physicians the opportunity to gain additional expertise

  • Second, fellowships are often required for physicians who want to pursue a career in academic medicine or research

  • Finally, fellowships can be a valuable networking opportunity, helping physicians connect with others in their field for ongoing knowledge exchange and personal and professional support.

As with residencies, competition to get into a fellowship program can be intense, as there are typically many more applicants than available positions! The selection process usually considers an applicant's academic record, clinical experience, research experience and letters of recommendation and a personal interview.

Congratulations again to these residents on this important achievement and next step in their practices and careers!
