Celebrating the Success of the First Ever March Ortho Madness at the University of Arizona

March 31, 2025
Ortho March Madness Event

This past month the University of Arizona proudly hosted its first-ever March Ortho Madness, an event that brought together a vibrant community of orthopaedic professionals, students, and supporters for a day full of innovation, education, and fun. From start to finish, the event exceeded expectations, providing an exciting and engaging experience for everyone involved.

The festivities kicked off on Friday with a warm welcome from President Suresh Garimella, one of the newest members of the University of Arizona community. His remarks set the tone for an inspiring day ahead. The event’s highlight came from none other than Dr. John Tokish, a legendary figure in orthopaedic sports medicine and an esteemed alumni of the University’s orthopaedic residency program. His speech, centered on the importance of seizing every opportunity, regardless of one’s current situation, resonated deeply with attendees, leaving them motivated and inspired to pursue their goals.

In addition to Dr. Tokish's powerful message, advocacy took center stage. Dr. Greg Hrasky, President of the Arizona Orthopaedic Society, and Amanda Sheinson from the Arizona Medical Association, emphasized the importance of supporting the orthopaedic community and advocating for the advancement of the field.

The event also showcased a series of captivating faculty talks, covering a wide range of topics—from groundbreaking biomechanics research involving turkeys on treadmills (yes, you read that right!) to the incredible work of women in orthopaedics providing joint replacement services to underserved communities abroad. The level of expertise and innovation on display left attendees with a sense of excitement about the future of the field.

Saturday followed with even more excitement as participants came together for the first-ever March Ortho Madness Golf Scramble at the beautiful Marriott Starr Pass Resort. The event was a fun and relaxed way to continue the camaraderie and spirit of the weekend while connecting with others who work, support, and benefit from the University of Arizona’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

All in all, Ortho March Madness was a massive success—filled with lively discussion, remarkable presentations, and plenty of fun along the way. It was an event that brought together a diverse group of people united by their passion for orthopaedics, education, and innovation. As we look forward to next year’s event, we can’t wait to see how the Ortho March Madness community continues to grow and inspire!
