Applications must be received by November 1.
Our department has determined that in-person interviews will be held in Tucson on January 10th and 11th, 2025. We feel this is the best way for you, the applicant, to get to know us and to see our wonderful and sunny city. We will host a social event on Friday January 10, 2025 to allow everyone to mingle and talk in an unstructured and fun atmosphere.
Note that while COPA has recommended virtual interviews for all candidates as part of sweeping recommendations to the residency application process, we are still debating the pros and cons of in-person vs. virtual interviews to best meet the needs of the applicants and our program. At this time, we plan to conduct in-person interviews for the 2024/2025 residency application cycle. We will post any changes to that policy on this website.

All applicants must participate in the National Residency Matching Program.
Applications are accepted ONLY through AAMC's Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which allows equal evaluation of all applicants using the valuable functions of that program while also maintaining a complete online database of residency applications.
If you have questions about ERAS, learn more from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
All applicants must submit the following materials through the ERAS program, and all materials must be received by Nov. 1:
- Curriculum vitae
- Current color photograph
- Personal statement
- Medical school transcript
- Dean's letter
- 3 standardized letters of recommendation
- USMLE-certified transcript scores
Medical graduates from outside the U.S. must also submit an ECFMG Status Report.
Osteopaths must also submit COMLEX certified transcript scores.
Applicants are responsible for soliciting letters of recommendation. We strongly encourage that all letters of recommendation be submitted using the American Orthopedic Association Electronic Standardized Letter of Recommendation format and process.
Medical students from outside the United States may find useful information at the ACGME Website under GMEducation Useful Information / Entry of Foreign-Born Medical Graduates to the United States.
Note that medical students from outside the U.S. must also include an ECFMG Status Report among their application materials.
We acknowledge there are multiple subspecialties which contribute to the greater field of orthopedics, such as the overlap of neurosurgery in spine care, and the three fields of hand surgery: general surgery, plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery.
Moreover, there is great overlap between orthopedics and sports medicine. The University of Arizona, for example, has a non-operative sports medicine fellowship with candidates from PMR, emergency medicine and family practice.
Because of the overlap of specialties, and in accordance with the "highly suggested" guidance from COPA and AAMC, we will be unable to discern or enforce whether applicants have done more than one "specialty” rotation. As such, this information will not be considered in evaluating your application to our residency.
Applicant completing a sub-internship (sub-I) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine will be invited for an virtual interview on January 8, 2025 via zoom upon performance on the rotation. More information will be provided upon arrival from the program coordinator.
For all other applicants, once we have reviewed all complete applications, we will contact competitive candidates through ERAS with invitations to interview.
Invitation-only interviews give our faculty the best opportunity to evaluate competitive candidates in as fair a manner as possible. This policy also averts interview expenses that might otherwise be incurred by candidates whom we do not consider competitive.
Consistent with our emphasis on resident education, we will shut down all elective clinical responsibilities to make nearly all faculty available to interview candidates.
