Zong-Ming Li Honored for Discoveries in Hand Biomechanics

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers awarded Department of Orthopaedic Surgery professor and vice chair for research Zong-Ming Li, PhD, the 2022 Savio L-Y. Woo Translational Biomechanics Medal, honoring individuals who help move bioengineering science from the lab into clinical practice.
One of the areas of contribution specifically associated with the distinguished award is bioengineering science translated into an invented medical device or equipment. One area of focus for Li, who directs the Hand Research Laboratory, is carpal tunnel syndrome. Li, his research team and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic developed a non-surgical intervention for relieving the nerve pain caused by the condition.
The Savio L-Y. Woo Translational Biomechanics Medal, established in 2015, recognizes an individual who has translated meritorious bioengineering science to clinical practice through research, education, professional development, and with service to the bioengineering community.
Receiving this award is especially meaningful for Li, as it's named for one of his former mentors. Earlier in his career, Li spent time in Dr. Woo’s Musculoskeletal Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
