Michael Zuscik on Translational Medicine in Arthritis Research
Michael Zuscik, PhD, is the Mack Clayton Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Zuscik recently shared his work with residents in Grand Rounds in April.
His research focuses on three areas of orthopedic medicine:
- Study of the pathological impact of obesity on the skeleton, particularly bone and joint health and fracture healing
- Elucidating the role of the gut microbiome in post-traumatic and obesity-associated osteoarthritis
- The development of disease-modifying treatments to address joint degeneration in osteoarthritis
Translational research spans from bench to bedside, involving basic molecular-cellular biology and microbiology in microbial and cell culture systems, state-of-the-art animal models of disease and human clinical trials.
Zuscik's aim is to pursue basic study of skeletal homeostasis and disease, using information gained from that work to develop therapeutic strategies that address key orthopedic challenges, including fracture non-union, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
