Thank you for your interest in our program, which graduated its first resident in 1973. We are proud to have over 100 alumni taking great care of patients across the country. Dr. John Elfar, a hand surgeon and NIH-funded researcher, has seamlessly taken over as Department Chair since August 2022 with the retirement of Dr. John Ruth.

I love the proverb, “Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand.” In line with that philosophy, we offer a uniquely resident-focused experience.

  • I proudly state that our program has NO FELLOWS — our entire focus is on YOUR education and skill development
  • We favor rotations of 2 to 3 months to allow residents to experience continuity of patient care and develop relationships of trust with their mentors
  • Our fundamental educational rationale is that you mentor on each specialty as both a junior and senior resident; as such, our residents get great operative experience early in the program, but we also develop the entire skill set of medical decision-making

Our culture focuses on collaboration, growth and improvement, such that over 5 years, residents gain an appreciation of their individual limitations and strengths.

Our goal is to optimize patient care while also helping residents develop a lifelong practice of reflection and self-directed learning as not just exceptional orthopedic surgeons, but as compassionate and ethical ones, as well.
